› What Foster Care is?

Foster care is a social institution protecting children aged from 0-18 years old which is applicable by the Social Services of the Government.

The legislation for children entitles the Director of Social Services to undertake the legal care of children, who need care and protection and whom parents are unable to fulfil their parental responsibilities. Taking the legal care of a child by the Social Welfare Services means moving the child from the environment in which he lives and placing him in a suitable foster family or in a suitable approved Child Protection scheme. The removal of the child may be temporary and / or until adulthood.

Foster families are those that, after their request to the Social Welfare Services, have been evaluated by the SWS as appropriate to provide substitute family care for children aged between 0-18 years old that are moved out of their family environment. Thus the child is hosted in a suitable family environment and he is provided all the necessary care and protection for as long as judged by the SWS that it is for his benefit.

The Foster Family ‘Love Nest’ Association aims to inform the public about the institution of foster care and support foster families that are interested or approved and hence in helping children themselves.
